What really causes cat allergies? It's not actually their fur, as many people assume..

If you love cats but allergies are a concern, choosing the right cat can feel like a bit of a gamble.

You may have heard that Siberians are a “low-allergen” or “hypoallergenic” breed, and there is some reason for that reputation. Siberians are often reported to produce lower levels of Fel d 1, the major cat allergen found in saliva and skin secretions.

But there are some caveats: there is no completely hypoallergenic cat, and sensitivity varies from human to human.

That is why, if allergies are an issue for you, we don't think choosing a cat based solely on a breed description or an allergy claim is the best approach.

The best test? Spend some time with the cats.

If you are considering welcoming a Siberian into your home and you're concerned about allergies, we'd much rather have you come and spend some proper time with Siberians.

And by proper time, we mean a snuggle session.

Sit with them. Stroke them. Let them climb onto you. Spend some time in the same environment and see how you feel.

Because ultimately, you need to know for sure that you're going to be able to live together without a problem. Otherwise it can mean heartbreak for both you and your cat if you find out too late that living together isn't possible.

Why we don't recommend cat cafés as an allergy test

Cat cafés might seem like the obvious place to test your reaction to cats, but they aren't necessarily the most useful environment for this purpose.

There may be a large number of cats from different backgrounds and with different allergen levels in one relatively confined space. There are also other variables to consider, including cleaning routines, ventilation, fabrics and surfaces, and the general level of allergen in the environment. So even if you have snuggle time with a cat from the breed of your choice there, you may react to others there, rather than your chosen breed.

A more meaningful test is to spend time with the specific type of cat you're considering, ideally in a clean, controlled environment and for long enough to get a realistic sense of how you respond.

No promises — just a sensible way to find out

We won't tell you that choosing a Siberian guarantees you won't have an allergic reaction.

It doesn't.

What we can do is give you the opportunity to spend time with our Siberians before you make a decision.

If allergies are a concern and you're searching for the right cat for your family, message us and we'll arrange a time for you to come and spend some time with our cats.

Bring yourself, take your time, and have a proper cuddle.

You may discover that Siberians really are a wonderful fit for you.

And if they aren't, we'd rather you discover that before you bring a cat home.

That's better for everyone — and especially for the cat.
