Ethical Breeder: What Does That Actually Mean?

Paper note on a notebook with a pen reads Ethical Breeder Explained – what does it mean? on a rustic wooden table.

When you're looking for a pedigree kitten in Thailand, you'll find plenty of beautiful cats and plenty of people selling kittens.

But there is a big difference between breeding cats and producing kittens.

At Auralune, we consider ourselves an ethical breeder. For us, that isn't just about health testing or pedigrees. It's about the way our cats live, the way our kittens are raised, and the responsibility we take for the lives we bring into the world.

Our cats are part of our home

Our breeding cats aren't kept in cages or separate from family life. They are part of our household, living, playing and interacting with us every day.

And our kittens are raised the same way.

When they're tiny, they obviously need a protected, quiet space with their mother. But as they grow, their world gradually opens up.

They experience normal home life from the very beginning — different people, other animals, household sounds, play, exploration and all the little things that make up everyday life.

They learn what it's like to be a cat in a home, rather than spending their early life in a cage and only discovering family life when they're sold.

That's important to us.

A kitten going to its new family shouldn't have to learn what a home is from scratch. It should already understand that humans are part of its world, that there are different sounds and experiences, and that home is a safe and familiar place.

Health and temperament come first

Ethical breeding also means making thoughtful decisions about which cats should be bred, paying attention to health, structure and temperament — not simply breeding because kittens are in demand.

And it means recognising that sometimes not breeding is the responsible choice.

Beautiful kittens are wonderful, but we're trying to create healthy, well-adjusted Siberians with excellent temperaments, not simply produce as many kittens as possible.

Kittens aren't products

At Auralune, our kittens are raised as individuals. We get to know their personalities, their quirks and their preferences before they leave us.

They're not products coming off a production line. They're little living beings who will hopefully become part of someone's family for the next 15 years or more.

That's why we care so much about where they go — and why our responsibility doesn't simply end when a kitten leaves our home.

For us, ethical breeding is really quite simple:

Healthy cats. Thoughtful breeding. Home-raised kittens. Proper socialisation. And a genuine commitment to every cat we bring into the world.

We aren't trying to run a kitten farm.

We're trying to build a healthy, beautiful Siberian line that we can be proud of for generations to come.
