What actually causes a cat allergy?

One of the biggest misconceptions about cat allergies is that people are allergic to the fur itself.

They're not.

The main allergen responsible for cat allergies is a protein called Fel d 1, which is produced primarily in a cat's saliva and also in other skin secretions. Cats spread it onto their coat when they groom themselves, which is why it ends up on their fur, skin and in the surrounding environment.

This is also why simply choosing a cat with less hair doesn't necessarily make any difference to an allergy sufferer. In fact, the length of the coat isn't the important part.

What can make a difference is how much Fel d 1 an individual cat produces.

Siberians are widely recognised as a breed that can produce lower levels of Fel d 1 than many other cats. However, this isn't a guarantee, and levels can vary between individual cats. AND some people are more sensitive to even low levels than others. That's why we don't make promises that a Siberian will be allergy-free. We do know they are less prone to triggering allergic responses in people.

So we prefer to let you experience it for yourself.

We know this because we did exactly that

Our own journey into Siberians actually started with allergies.

Before Siberians, we had Turkish Angoras. In fact, my relationship with breeding cats goes back a long way — I found myself breeding Turkish Angoras a couple of decades ago, and they remained a very important part of my life for many years.

When allergies became a consideration for our family, however, we started looking seriously at Siberians.

Rather than relying on claims about the breed, we did the simplest thing possible: we spent time with Siberians.

That experience gave us the confidence that our son could live comfortably with them, and it ultimately led us to the Siberians that we have today.

So when we suggest that prospective owners come and spend time with our cats, it's not just something we recommend in theory.

It's exactly how our own Siberian journey began.

And sometimes, the best allergy test is simply to sit down, relax and have a really good cuddle.
