Why Siberians? — The Cat Behind the Beauty

There is no denying that Siberians are beautiful.

With their magnificent coats, expressive eyes, substantial size and unmistakable presence, they are the kind of cats that make people stop and look.

But the beauty is only the beginning.

What makes a Siberian truly special is what you discover once you live with one.

Intelligent, Curious and Involved

Siberians are highly intelligent cats, and they tend to be genuinely interested in the world around them.

They want to know what you're doing. They investigate new things. They learn routines quickly and often find ways to make themselves part of whatever is happening in the household.

That intelligence is one of the things that makes living with a Siberian so entertaining. They aren't simply beautiful creatures occupying your home — they are actively engaged in it.

You may find one watching you from across the room, another investigating something you've just brought home, and another following you to see what happens next.

They like to be involved.

Affectionate, Without Being Overly Dependent

One of the qualities we love most about Siberians is the way they show affection.

They can be wonderfully loving and people-oriented without needing to be attached to you every second of the day.

A Siberian may curl up beside you, follow you from room to room, come looking for attention or simply sit nearby because they want to be where you are.

It's companionship rather than dependence.

And when they choose to come and seek you out, it feels all the more special.

The Dogs of the Cat World

Siberians are sometimes described as the dogs of the cat world, and once you know them, it's easy to understand why.

They often form remarkably strong relationships with their people. They may follow you around the house, greet you when you return, learn routines, enjoy interactive play and actively seek out human company.

Some even enjoy travelling and exploring new environments with their families.

This isn't to say that Siberians behave like dogs. They are very much cats — with all the independence, elegance and occasional complete disregard for your plans that comes with being a cat.

But there is something distinctly different about the way many Siberians connect with their humans.

They don't simply live alongside you.

They want to be part of your life.

Confident, Playful and Full of Character

A well-socialised Siberian is typically a confident and curious cat, with a playful nature that often continues well beyond kittenhood.

They can be wonderfully entertaining, but they also have a calm side. After the exploring, climbing and playing comes the inevitable search for somewhere comfortable to curl up.

That balance is part of their appeal.

They can be playful without being relentlessly demanding, affectionate without being overwhelming, and confident without being aloof.

And, like all good cats, they each have a personality entirely their own.

And Then There Is That Appearance...

Of course, we can't pretend the looks aren't part of the reason we fell in love with them.

Siberians have a naturally magnificent appearance. They are substantial, powerful cats with beautiful flowing coats, generous ruffs, expressive faces and a presence that is difficult to ignore.

Their appearance reflects their origins too.

The Siberian is a natural breed from Russia, shaped over generations in the harsh climate of Siberia. Their thick, insulating coat and strong build are part of what gives the breed its distinctive character.

And then there is the Neva Masquerade — the colourpoint variety of the Siberian, with its striking blue eyes and darker markings.

Beautiful is an understatement.

A Breed With Russian Roots

There is something particularly appealing about the history of a breed that developed naturally in Russia rather than being created primarily for a particular modern appearance.

Siberians have long been associated with the forests and rural regions of Russia, where their strength, adaptability and thick coats were essential.

Today, of course, they are just as happy stretched across a sofa as exploring the great outdoors.

But they have retained that wonderful combination of strength, beauty and character that makes the Siberian so distinctive.

Why Are Siberians Becoming So Sought After?

Perhaps it is because people are increasingly looking beyond appearance when choosing a cat.

They want a cat that is beautiful, but they also want one that will genuinely become part of their family.

They want intelligence.

They want affection.

They want personality.

They want a cat that can interact with them, play with them and enjoy being around them — while still being perfectly capable of having a little independence.

For allergy-sensitive families, Siberians have also attracted considerable interest because they are widely regarded as a lower-allergen breed. Some people even describe them as hypoallergenic. No cat is completely allergy-free, but many people who react to other cats find they experience fewer symptoms around Siberians.

It is this combination — magnificent appearance, engaging temperament and, for some people, a more manageable allergy experience — that has helped Siberians become increasingly sought after around the world.

And in much of Asia, they are still surprisingly undiscovered.

Siberians in Thailand

Auralune is a Phuket-based Siberian cattery, bringing these extraordinary cats to families in Thailand and beyond.

Our foundation cats were carefully selected from experienced breeders in Russia, and they have already represented us in cat shows in both Russia and Thailand.

Although our home base is Phuket, our cats regularly travel between Phuket and Bangkok, so the Auralune family is very much part of life in both places.

For us, this is about more than bringing Siberians to Thailand. It is about introducing people here to a breed that we believe deserves to be much better known — and raising Siberians with the beauty, character and confidence that made us fall in love with them in the first place.

Why We Chose Siberians

For us, choosing Siberians was never simply about finding beautiful cats.

It was about finding cats with the qualities we wanted to live with.

Our own Siberians have shown us just how different a cat can be when intelligence, confidence, affection and personality come together.

Yermak, our foundational stud, is a perfect example. He is extraordinarily handsome, but it is his temperament that makes him truly special — calm, gentle, loyal and easygoing. He is happiest by our side and remarkably comfortable wherever life takes us.

Our queens each have their own personalities too.

Plyushka is our calm, nurturing mama bear. Saphyra is endlessly curious and will often stop whatever she is doing simply to gaze lovingly across the room at us. Vespita is our energetic adventurer who turns into a complete snuggle cat when it is time to rest. And Veiyalita is quite literally my shadow, following me wherever I go.

They are all Siberians.

And yet they are all completely different.

That is perhaps the greatest lesson they have taught us.

The Siberian isn't simply a beautiful breed.

It is a breed with intelligence, character, confidence, affection and an extraordinary ability to form a relationship with the people around them.

That is the cat behind the beauty.

And that is why we fell in love with Siberians.
